William Cullen and Elizabeth Prest
Alexander
Hugh Mac Cullen was one of several children of William Cullen
(1823-1897) and his wife Elizabeth (nee Prest) (thought to be about 1825
to 1902). They lived their entire lives in the Tynham and Sittingbourne
are of Kent.
Census and other Records:
We are able to trace most of this
couple's lives through the census records.
In 1871 the couple are living at 20
High Street, Sittingbourne. Alexander Hugh (now 16) had left home although
his brothers Adolph (age 14) and William (age 15) were still there. Also
living there are William's in-laws William C. Prest, a retired lace
manufacturer aged 69 and born in Dover and his wife Elizabeth, aged 68, born
in Barnstable, Devon. She is listed as a lunatic, the insensitive Victorian
term usually used for people suffering from Alzheimer's and similar
conditions.
In 1881 the couple are living at 47
High Street, Sittingbourne. Only their son Adolph is living at home. Both he
and his father are listed as painters.
William Cullen died in 1897.
